First feminist network meeting in Schwerin: Strong together for equality!

On Tuesday evening, November 12th, 2025, there was a lot going on at the Knotpunkt e.V. in Schwerin. At the first feminist network meeting, around 25 committed participants gathered to promote exchange and networking. A take-away buffet created a cozy atmosphere and offered space for conversations and new acquaintances, while several local initiatives and associations introduced themselves.

The initiatives presented included Migra Voices, Girls' Meeting, Decolonize Schwerin and the FLINTA collective. The Brushpark citizens' initiative was also represented. The new equal opportunities officer for the city of Schwerin did not miss the opportunity to be present to hear the concerns and demands of the women's movement first hand. The participants called on the city to provide concrete support and structural support for feminist urban development in order to better address the needs and challenges of local women.

A look into the future

A central theme of the evening was brainstorming for the upcoming Feminist Day of Fight in 2026. Ideas were developed for a “Feminist Weekend” under the motto “Feminism is good”, which is to take place around March 8th. This commitment shows that the feminist movement in Schwerin is alive and wants to continue to grow.

The next meeting is already planned for January 14, 2026, and everyone interested is warmly invited to get actively involved. Anyone interested can register at the ASK FLINTA team's email address: ask-groeger@posteo.de.

The roots of the movement

A look at the development of feminism shows that the movement has a deep-rooted knowledge of history that dates back to the 1960s. At that time, the second wave of the women's movement began, supported by the idea of achieving social and economic equality as well as criticism of sexual violence against women and the suppression of female sexuality. This wave also gave rise to different movements, from autonomous groups to radical feminist movements, which demanded the abolition of patriarchal norms, as the equality portal has learned.

What is also exciting is the difference between the experiences of women in East and West Germany, which continues to shape feminist engagement today. While there was a certain degree of professional freedom in the GDR, women in West Germany were often subject to cultural and political restrictions due to church influences. Such differences continue to influence discussions about topics such as abortion bans and the birth control pill today.

Considering this history, it becomes clear that feminism is not just a current issue, but is deeply rooted in society. The foundations laid at the first network meeting are crucial for the future development of the feminist movement in Schwerin.
