There is a worrying trend in Schwerin: the number of births will continue to decline in 2024. With only 1,112 births, a decrease of 28 was recorded compared to the previous year. This corresponds to a minus of around 2.5 percent. In contrast, there has been an alarming increase in deaths, which have risen to 2,314, 171 more than in 2023. This development ensures that the number of births continues to lag behind the number of deaths, which clearly indicates a worrying demographic change. Silvio Horn, the responsible councilor, made it clear that Schwerin is not alone with this trend, but is following the nationwide pattern.
Interestingly, more boys (52 percent) were born than girls (48 percent). Particular months in which the most births were registered are January with 115 and the summer months of July (113) and August (114). The decline in the birth rate is not just a local phenomenon, but fits into an overarching trend that is emerging in many regions of Germany.

The relevant authority described the situation as a “fast-moving outbreak investigation,” with one person also dying and 10 others hospitalized. Analysts have zeroed in on the impact on customer traffic and current offerings like the Chicken Big Mac and McRib. Both Peter Saleh and Andy Barish of Jefferies commented on the situation and advised changing advertising approaches from value to quality to regain consumer trust.
