Dangerous roads in MV: 93 deaths and a drastic accident record in 2024!

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the current accident record shows that road traffic will not have become safer in 2024. According to the state police, the state recorded a total of 55,106 traffic accidents, a slight decrease of 1.0% compared to the previous year. But the number of road deaths rose alarmingly to 93, marking the highest level since 2015. What is particularly frightening is the increase in cyclist deaths, rising from just 2 in 2023 to 14 last year, with nine of those injured not wearing helmets. This suggests that there is an urgent need for action to increase safety on the roads. Ostsee Zeitung reports on the need for targeted prevention measures.

The Vorpommern-Rügen district recorded the highest number of traffic deaths with 20 deaths, while the Rostock district had the lowest number with 8. A third of those who died died in collisions with trees. The most common causes of serious accidents are failure to yield right of way, failure to maintain a safe distance, excessive speed and driving under the influence of alcohol. It becomes even clearer: drivers were the culprits in almost two thirds of all accidents that resulted in personal injuries.

The most dangerous roads

A look at the top 5 most dangerous roads in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can't hurt either. These roads represent a particular challenge for all road users:

  • Lübsche Straße in Wismar – 17 Unfälle
  • Hamburger Straße in Rostock und Heinrich-Heine-Ring in Stralsund – jeweils 14 Unfälle
  • St. Petersburger Straße, Warnowallee und Südring in Rostock – jeweils 13 Unfälle
  • Hamburger Allee in Schwerin und Strelitzer Straße in Waren (Müritz) – jeweils 12 Unfälle
  • Rostocker Chaussee in Stralsund und Güstrow sowie Neustrelitzer Straße in Neubrandenburg – jeweils 11 Unfälle

These numbers speak for themselves and call into question road safety in the region. Interior Minister Christian Pegel has already announced measures to reduce accidents. This includes increased traffic controls and preventative programs to minimize the dangers on the road.

Statistics as a decision-making aid

The comprehensive traffic accident statistics are not just numbers. They also serve as a valuable basis for the development of measures in legislation, traffic education, road construction and vehicle technology. Destatis emphasizes that a differentiated view of accidents and the respective causes helps us to implement targeted and effective strategies to improve road safety.

Another aspect is the European perspective on road safety. You can find out more about the central data and statistics on the Eurostat website. This shows how road safety is developing within the EU and what measures are being taken to reduce accidents.

The current situation calls for action, both from the authorities and from road users themselves. It is up to all of us to do our part to make the roads safer.
