Young talents conquer Schwerin: WESPE 2025 attracts with concert highlights!
Over the coming weekend, Schwerin will once again become a mecca for young talent when around 100 winners from “Jugend musiziert” make their way to the state capital. On October 17th and 18th, the “Weekend of Special Prizes” (WESPE) will take place in the Schwerin Conservatory, which will be held for the third time this year - after the successful events in 2012 and 2022. Here, the young musicians will be given the opportunity to deal with lesser-known or difficult-to-interpret works and to present their skills to the public. NDR reports that All performances are public and free of charge, which ensures a broad audience and promotes appreciation for young artists.
The event is rounded off with a total of around 60 short concerts, which take place at various locations such as the ATARAXIA music and art school, the Campus am Turm and the Schwerin Conservatory. Even though access to the entire competition is free, tickets for the grand final concert on October 18th at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of the Fridericianum high school can be purchased. The city of Schwerin highlights that the event is not just a competition, but also offers a platform for further training and stimulation of the participants' musical activity.
Prices and special features
This year, the jury evaluated more than 1,800 young people and awarded a total of 25,500 euros in cash prizes, which are financed by ten foundations, institutions and private individuals. First-class prizes also go to the talented musicians from Schwerin itself - two first prizes stayed in the city. The “Jugend musiziert” competition is considered the largest music competition in Germany and places particular emphasis on promoting musical talent among the youngest.
A total of around 160 participants took part in the competition in various categories, resulting in an impressive number of 124 competition games. This form of competition, which is anchored in the federal government's children and youth plan, runs over three stages and has reached almost a million children and young people since it was founded in 1963, giving them the opportunity to present their musical talents.
A festival of encounters
An additional highlight are the workshops that are offered during the WESPE to provide further training for young musicians. This is where composers meet young talents and create valuable contacts for future projects. A public award winners' concert enables personal encounters between the musicians and the special award donors and ensures that the social aspect is not neglected.
With their commitment, the city of Schwerin and the various special award donors contribute to promoting the cultural landscape and want to support the talents of tomorrow. In this way, the “Weekend of Special Prizes” becomes an unforgettable experience for everyone involved, whether as active participants or as enthusiastic listeners.
