Kreuzchor inspires in Demmin: A musical celebration of tradition!
On Friday evening there was a concert in the almost sold out Bartholomaei Church in Demmin Dresden Kreuzchor took place, which attracted more than 520 visitors. Under the direction of Martin Lehmann, the 69 talented singers aged 10 to 18 offered a varied program: sacred songs were played during the first half, followed by German folk songs after the break. The audience was so enthusiastic that they demanded two encores, rounding off the concert with the popular piece “The Moon Has Risen”.
It is particularly worth mentioning that the performance had a special meaning for Lehmann, who was born in Malchin. Another concert previously took place in the sold-out Schwerin Cathedral, and the choir's next performance is planned for Sunday at the open air in Chorin Monastery. Many of the listeners traveled from nearby places such as Teterow, Malchin and Neubrandenburg, which shows how popular the Kreuzchor's performances are.
A long tradition
But what makes the Dresden Kreuzchor so special? The choir can look back on a long tradition that stretches back at least 700 years, making it one of the five oldest boys' choirs in Europe. In total, the Dresdner Kreuzchor is one of 125 members, affectionately known as “Crucianians”, and is divided into all four voices – soprano, alto, tenor and bass.
The choir members live in the choir's own alumni and attend the Protestant Kreuzgymnasium, which reflects the close connection between school and musical training. In addition to the design of the Musica Sacra for vespers and the musical design of church services in Dresden's Kreuzkirche, around 100 concerts are on the program every year. The repertoire ranges from the early baroque to the modern era and includes works by well-known composers such as Heinrich Schütz as well as contemporary pieces.
A cultural asset under pressure
How SVZ reports, the maintenance and continuation of this musical tradition faces challenges. Martin Lehmann, with a strong commitment to German folk songs, emphasizes the importance of keeping the Kreuzchor's legacy alive. In times of change, it is essential to promote young talent and create awareness of the cultural roots that the Dresdner Kreuzchor represents.
The choir's success is based on daily rehearsals and intensive singing and instrumental lessons, a concept that has proven itself and is internationally recognized. The Dresdner Kreuzchor not only brings joy to its listeners, but also makes a significant contribution to Germany's cultural identity. In the future, it will be exciting to see how the tradition continues and what challenges the choir will face.
