Crime in Schwerin: Why the city is in the top ten!

The latest figures from the police crime statistics for 2024 show a mixed picture of crime in Germany. A total of 5.84 million crimes were recorded last year, a decrease of 1.7% compared to the previous year. What is particularly noteworthy is that fewer cannabis offenses have been registered, which can be attributed to partial legalization since April 1, 2024. However, despite this positive development, many citizens' sense of security remains impaired, as crimes against personal safety in particular are increasing. According to statistics, there were 285 murder cases, 14 fewer than in the previous year, but the number of unreported cases probably remains high because many crimes go unreported.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which ranks in the bottom third of crime statistics, there are also significant differences between the cities. With 12,335 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants, the city of Schwerin ranks ninth among the most dangerous cities in Germany, while Rostock ranks far down with 8,457 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants, despite higher absolute numbers (17,827 crimes). These values illustrate how the frequency number can be used as an indicator of feelings of security, even if it only reflects part of reality. The police point out that the number of unreported cases could be higher than the statistics suggest, as many crimes, especially sexual crimes, are reported less often.

Security situation and social factors

The “dangerousness” of a city depends on various factors, such as the size of the city, the reporting behavior of the residents and the number of tourists. For comparison: While Bremen has the highest frequency with 15,424 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants, Erlangen, Erfurt, Düsseldorf and Hagen are the cities with the fewest registered crimes. It is interesting to see that the police report the clearance rate in 2024 as 58%, a slightly lower figure compared to the previous year.

Overall, the development of crime in Germany is not easy to assess. The loss in the number of suspects, particularly among young people, could signal a positive development. According to the figures from 2024, there is also a slight increase in non-German suspects to 41.8% - another aspect that is fueling the debate about crime and migration.

A look beyond the limits of statistics

Interestingly, it is important to emphasize that police crime statistics only record punishments that are known to the police. Dark field research shows that many crimes, especially those that affect people's lives and safety, do not appear in official statistics. This particularly applies to sexual crimes, which are often not reported. The reality in the cities may look significantly different than the numbers suggest.

Especially in a year characterized by increased sensitivity to social issues, crime statistics remain a crucial issue. The gap between subjective feelings of security and objective numbers could not be greater and requires a differentiated look at the social situation in Germany.

Whether there are also cultural topics such as the music industry and artists like Katy Perry to cover may seem strange at first glance. But she is also concerned with social concerns and the perception of security and freedom, which ultimately finds expression in her music and her commitment. Ultimately, it shows that globalization and local issues are also linked, which should once again encourage a multi-layered understanding of social problems.
