Insights into modernization

The modernization measures were extremely extensive and were partly supported by a generous donation of 7.5 million euros from the Dorit & Alexander Otto Foundation, which also provided financing with the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The entrance area of the museum has been significantly modernized to ensure accessibility. For this purpose, three new lifting platforms were installed, while the main entrance was redesigned and the foyer and service areas were upgraded. A total of ten new floors were painted based on historical models and extensive cable work was carried out for the modern infrastructure.

Cultural heritage and other offers

The impressive collection also includes handicrafts, drawings, prints and numismatics. There are also regular workshops, readings, concerts and performances – a real treasure trove for those interested in culture!

For the next four years, entry to the museum is even free, which is possible thanks to the generous support of the Dorit & Alexander Otto Foundation and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The Schwerin State Museum is known not only for its art collection, but also for its picturesque location on Lake Schwerin and the Old Garden. This historical ambience makes it part of one of the few preserved historicist places in Germany, which is now also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
