New vocational training campus: 44.9 million for health expertise!

On October 28, 2025, the starting signal was given for an important project in the field of health professions: the construction of a new higher vocational school for health professions at the Greifswald University Medical Center. In the presence of Science Minister Bettina Martin, Prof. Dr. The plans were presented to Karlhans Finally and Jana Luntz in Schwerin. With an investment of a whopping 44.9 million euros, training in health professions is intended to be significantly improved, as the need for qualified specialists is high today.

The new school will create a total of 975 training and study places. Of these, 675 places are for professions such as dietitians, orthopedists, speech therapists as well as medical-technical laboratory assistants and nursing specialists. In addition, 150 places are planned for training, further education and training in health professions and also 150 places for students of clinical nursing sciences.

Modern approaches to training

The new building will take place directly on the grounds of the Greifswald University Medical Center and the public contract award is scheduled for next year. Prof. Dr. Finally, the importance of the new nursing school is emphasized: “It represents a significant contribution to medical care.”

Particular attention is paid to the integration of modern teaching and learning methods as well as digital formats. In her presentation, Jana Luntz highlighted the comprehensive approach to planning, which focuses on interprofessional learning and practical training. The new school not only stands for solid training, but also for the future of the health professions in the region.

Shortage of skilled workers in the health sector

Current developments in the healthcare industry show that well-trained specialists are more in demand than ever. In Germany, job titles in the medical professions are protected. This means that using these titles requires approval or special permission. Violations are punished as a criminal offense or misdemeanor. The application for approval requires proof of completed training or studies as well as passing a state examination. Details on this are set out in the relevant licensing regulations.

The new vocational school is intended not only to respond to current demand, but also to close existing gap analyzes in the field of health professions. According to an EU directive, practicing the profession in other member states is made easier, which offers a further incentive for future students.

Overall, this project is intended to help actively counteract the shortage of skilled workers in the health sector and at the same time raise the quality of training to a new level. A good step towards future-oriented healthcare!
