New SOS Children's Village in Schwerin: 23 places for children in need!
A new light for Schwerin: On Friday, November 7th, 2025, the symbolic laying of the foundation stone for the new SOS Children's Village on Lankower Straße took place. Preparations for this important project have been going on since 2020, and the goal is clear: to offer more protective spaces and perspectives for children and young people. The sponsor, the SOS Children's Village, has worked hard to strengthen the original idea of the children's village while at the same time meeting the needs of the region.
In total, three new residential units will be built on a spacious plot of 4,000 square meters, offering space for a total of 23 children and young people. These facilities are not only intended to create a safe temporary home, but also to give you the feeling of being able to stay in familiar surroundings. The first building will be a children's emergency service on Bornhövedstrasse, which will be a 24-hour contact point for children in crisis situations.
Diverse living concepts
But that's not all: the new village also includes a children's residential group for four to 14 year olds and a hybrid solution that provides apartments for young people as well as housing options for young mothers and fathers. The large common room is innovative and not only benefits the residents but is also opened up to the district. This participation is intended to promote social exchange in the neighborhood and give the children a feeling of community.
If you notice the increasing numbers, the demand in Schwerin remains high. Over 69,500 children and young people nationwide were taken into care by youth welfare offices in 2024. It is all the more important that the children do not have to move far if they need longer care. The new facilities address this need.
Outlook and future
The project is not only a great hope for the children and young people in the region, but also a step into the future: Construction is scheduled to start in spring 2026, so that the first children can move into the new homes by 2028. With three modern residential units, each with 300 square meters of living space, the new facilities are designed for the well-being of children and young people. They are also in close proximity to Lake Lankower, which makes the place even more attractive.
The existing locations on Bornhövedstrasse, Schelfstadt and Lankow will remain in operation, ensuring a seamless transition and comprehensive support. Those responsible at SOS Children's Villages are confident: “We have a good handle on the needs of children and young people!”
The anticipation of the new rooms and possibilities is palpable, and the laying of the foundation stone is an important step in the right direction. The decision to further invest in Schwerin could have a fruitful impact on the lives of many young people.
