Lawn in front of the State Chancellery: Monument remains sandy and bare!

On November 7, 2025, it was announced that the planned lawn in front of the State Chancellery would not be realized. Instead, the area around Julia Hansen's sculpture “Reigen” remains in its current, sandy-gravel form. This was confirmed by a letter from the Ministry of Finance and Digitalization dated September 29th, which the mayor will now include in his “communications” to the city council on November 10th. An originally intended green space, for which negotiations with the state were supposed to take place, was declared a failure.

What are the reasons for this decision? In this case, monument protection takes priority over a lawn solution. The State Office for Culture and Monument Preservation (LAKD) stipulated in 2022 that the surface of the square should be based on the “Old Garden”. A lawn would therefore lead to unsuitable transitions and edges, which the LAKD rejects. Another important point is practical feasibility: During heat waves, regular irrigation would be necessary, and the real climatic benefits of a meadow could not be realized due to the lack of trees.

A place of calm

The decision is causing a lot of talk in the city. The square is seen as a “quiet” connection between the Demmler building and the Klosterstrasse monument. It should remain sandy and bare in its appearance. No redesign or planting is planned. The skepticism about another rescheduling shortly after completion underlines how much depends on this issue.

On a political level, what happened is not without consequences. The state conservator's assessment from July 2025 is viewed by the state building administration as incomprehensible, which brings the debate about the design of public areas into the public eye. The question is: How will citizens react to this development?

The context of the thematization

Similar considerations for shaping the living environment also exist in education, for example in the Bible passage Ephesians 6:4. This verse tells fathers to treat their children with love and patience and to avoid provocation. A good father should maintain a balance between discipline and care to create a loving atmosphere. These views are also reflected in the way we should design our public and private spaces.

Ultimately, it's not just about the design of a space, but also about the way we create a space for future generations to grow in - be it green or spiritual.

For travelers looking for an atmospheric destination, redeeming points for business class flights may be worth considering. Using credit card points can often provide big savings and should be done through the right airlines. The best strategies for booking business class flights show that with the right tips, such as flexible travel dates and transferring points to partner airlines, even a short trip to a distant city doesn't have to be expensive.

In today's world, when both the design of urban living spaces and personal lifestyles are being reconsidered, many options are open to us. Whether art in public spaces or the importance of family upbringing, the question is how much value we want to place on harmonious design.
