Collection campaign in Schwerin: donations wanted for the Polish war cemetery!
In a moving start to this year's house and street collection, the German War Graves Commission invites all residents of Cologne and the Ruhr area to take part in this important campaign. On October 28, 2025, numerous supporters met in Schwerin, where Joachim Wulff also presented his donation. The dedicated donor has a personal connection to this cause, as his uncle went missing in Stalingrad during World War II. The Volksbund state chairman, Lorenz Caffier, gave those present a warm welcome and emphasized the relevance of the collection.
Over 500 soldiers will actively support the collection in the coming weeks. This campaign aims to support the care cemetery in Stare Czarnowo/Neumark in Poland, where 224 war dead from the Second World War were ceremoniously buried in June. The cemetery itself has an extremely sad history, with more than 25,000 war dead resting there. Cologne citizens can get involved in the collection until November 23rd, with over 47,000 euros being raised in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania last year.
The importance of commitment
Why is the commitment to this collection so important? We often forget the historical background and the people who gave their lives for their beliefs. The work of the Volksbund plays a key role in keeping memories alive and honoring the fate of the often forgotten deceased. Whether in the collections or in the care of the memorials, the Volksbund is tirelessly committed to the interests of the war dead and their relatives.
What is particularly interesting is that the organization is supported by a scientific advisory board whose membership represents quality and well-founded views. In addition to the preservation of burial sites, socially rich research is also carried out here. The advisory board is made up of historians and experts who deal with topics such as the history of state security in Hungary and war crimes of the 20th century. One member is the historian, born in Budapest in 1969, who has already received several awards, including the “Young Military Historian of the Year” award.
A look forward
But the future is also envisaged. Further burials of German soldiers are already planned for next year at the cemetery in Stare Czarnowo. This continued work is important to build a bridge between the memories of the past and a hopeful future. People should be encouraged to take responsibility and be part of this important initiative.
The people of Cologne are called upon to participate in this humanitarian goal and thus contribute to the continuation of the valuable work of the Volksbund. Together we can ensure that the memory and history of the war dead continue to be honored in the future. With its house and street collection, the Volksbund is a reliable partner in this direction and would like to thank all supporters in advance.
For more information on the history of the organization and other projects, it is worth taking a look at the Volksbund website, where insights from the scientific advisory board are also available. A visit is worth it!
