Closure of Kita Mosaik: Families in Schwerin are facing problems!
A bitter setback for families in Schwerin: the Mosaik Volkssolidarität daycare center will be closed at the end of the year. This decision surprises not only the parents, but also the employees of the 108 children. The reason? A technical inspection has shown that the old electrical cables pose a fire hazard. This means that the building, which was already considered in need of renovation, must finally close. More than 100 families in Neu Zippendorf are affected by this closure, which abruptly means the last kindergarten nest in the district is lost. How Northern Courier reports, the daycare center's list of defects has been known for years, but renovation was apparently not in sight.
It's hard to believe, but those responsible in the city of Schwerin and the People's Solidarity itself do not seem to agree on this misery. The city is now even coming up with clear planning because it sees no need for new places and wants to use the existing places for the children affected. People's Solidarity had already asked for support with investments in 2024, but now the parents have no choice but to accept longer journeys to other city facilities. There are also discrepancies in the construction of the replacement building: a possible new location on Pecser Strasse was rejected by the city on September 25, 2025.
Responsibility and reactions
For the 21 employees who work at Kita Mosaik, the year ends with uncertain prospects as they will be laid off at the end of the year. How NDR informed, People's Solidarity is also striving to have a conversation about responsibility for the failures that have occurred. However, parents continue to be put off by the fact that there are enough daycare places available in the area. Whether that is really the case remains to be seen. The local council sharply criticizes the closure and notes that the last childcare facilities in the town will be lost.
In a larger context, a survey by the Hans Böckler Foundation shows that many families in Germany are struggling with similar problems. Around 60 percent of parents reported that their childcare facilities had to close at short notice and many had to prepare for unexpected cancellations. Follow-up studies are also alarming with regard to democracy and equality, as women in particular are affected by these closures. The situation in the city makes it clear once again that there is an urgent need to expand the care offerings and ensure their quality. The conclusions are clear: the pressure on the existing facilities is growing, and without a clear strategy, many families face problems that go far beyond the closure of a daycare center.
What will happen next remains uncertain. Both the city and Volkssolidarität are responsible for setting the course for better care in the future.
