Schwerin celebrates reopening: 11.5 million euros for new museum!

The Schwerin State Museum will reopen its doors on Thursday after extensive renovation after four years. The renovation, for which an impressive 11.5 million euros were invested, was financed by the Dorit & Alexander Otto Foundation with 7.5 million euros and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 4 million euros. Originally the plans were for 6.25 million euros, but more funds were needed to make the listed building from the 19th century shine in new splendor.

The restoration work not only brought the historic ceilings, walls and floors back into shape, but also redesigned the entrance area and gained 400 square meters of additional exhibition space. Old layers of paint have been uncovered and all building services, including new toilet facilities, are up to date.

A day full of attractions

The reopening on October 30th will be celebrated with a party from 3 p.m. that offers a colorful program of tours, music, theater and clowning. There is plenty of entertainment for the little visitors - all with free entry, which is guaranteed for the next four years thanks to the Otto Foundation and the state. Admission to Schwerin Castle, however, increases to 13 euros, which may make some visitors smile.

The exhibition will not only evoke pastel-colored memories, but also offer cutting-edge digital, interactive offerings that make art and culture accessible to everyone. Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) emphasizes that the new access to the museum has been designed to be more barrier-free, which is particularly pleasing.

Art for everyone

In the new premises, visitors can admire around 500 works of art, including paintings, sculptures and coins from different centuries. The collections range from 17th-century Dutch painting to East German art, including Wolfgang Mattheuer's “Floating Lovers” and works by Marcel Duchamp. The new concept attracts even more families through digital offerings.

But there is not only something new to discover in the museum itself: the entire surrounding area is also being made more attractive for visitors. A snack area will be set up in the museum's Old Garden, and a light show will illuminate the area as night falls.

All in all, Thursday, October 30th, is a date that should be noted in the calendars of art and culture lovers. The Schwerin State Museum is ready to welcome its audience and ensure that art is brought together in the best sense - old and modern, traditional and contemporary. In doing so, the museum has shown a truly good hand.
