Schwerin is changing: TV tower shorter, Trekking König closes!
An exciting day in Schwerin: The television tower recently underwent a noticeable change. It was shortened by a full ten meters, so that the top of the tower is no longer needed. Deutsche Funkturm GmbH, the owner of the structure, confirmed that this technical dismantling will not result in any further changes to the tower. This means that the Schwerin television tower is now the second largest structure in the city, only surpassed by the impressive Schwerin Cathedral, which stands an impressive 117.50 meters high. The television tower remains an important location for mobile communications and continues to be used for communications. According to [Ostsee-Zeitung](https://www.ostsee-zeitung.de/lokales/ Schwerin/ Fernsehenturm-ohne-spitze-trekking-koenig-schliesst-laeden-stasi-archiv-oeffnet-7CTHLWZRC5EDXO3YC2DHNKFAPE.html) no further dismantling is planned.
But it's not just the TV tower that's getting people talking in the city - Trekking König, an outdoor equipment chain, has also announced that it will be closing two of its stores: the Schwerin branch will close its doors at the end of October, while the Wismar location will close a month earlier. The reason is falling sales and pressure from online retailers. Unfortunately, this means that 14 employees will lose their jobs. During a clearance sale, both goods and furniture are offered for sale. On a positive note, eight other branches of the chain will remain open.
Outlook on upcoming events
In another corner of Schwerin, a special event awaits the citizens: the Schwerin Stasi files archive in Leezen opens its doors on August 30th. In recent years, interest in the Stasi files has been high, with over 28,000 requests to inspect them. On the opening day, guided tours and a book presentation by the author Martin Stief on the GDR mood after the popular uprising in 1953 will be offered. Admission to the event is free and those interested should bring their ID to apply for access.
What better way to welcome autumn than with the Venetian Days, which take place in Schwerin from September 19th to 21st? Over 300 costume and robe wearers from 11 countries are expected and will bring a piece of Venice to the Müritz. In addition to craft lessons and an “aperitivo time,” visitors can also ride across the lake in an original gondola. Reservations for these gondola rides are already possible.
Holiday atmosphere in Wismar
Nearby Wismar is also celebrating: The Sweden Festival officially opens today at 4 p.m. on the market square. Among the guests are Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig and the Gislaved Drum Corps. The event promises a colorful program with historical representations, music, carousels and a dealer mile. A special highlight will be the Sweden Run and the historic parade. The festival day will be rounded off with a magnificent fireworks display at 10:45 p.m., which will light up the sky over Wismar.
