Schwerin TV tower loses height: ten meters removed!

Today, August 14, 2025, a remarkable renovation was carried out on the Schwerin television tower. Almost ten meters of the top of the tower were removed by helicopter, reducing the height of the structure to 116 meters. This intervention ensured that the television tower is no longer the tallest structure in Schwerin - this distinction now belongs to the cathedral, which measures an impressive 117.50 meters. The work was completed at 8:30 a.m. this morning and went faster than planned thanks to the good weather. The Ostsee Zeitung reports that the removal of a GRP cylinder that had adorned the building since 1971 took place. This cylinder was once intended as a temporary solution after a steel lattice mast formed the original spire in 1971.

74-year-old local resident Hans Kirschner expressed regret that he missed the event. He described the television tower as part of his life story since he lived in it when it was built in the 1960s. With the removal of the GRP cylinder, which was removed in five individual pieces, the remaining tip is now made of steel. The television tower continues to be used for mobile communications, while radio and television are broadcast via an adjacent transmission tower.

The television tower as a radio receiver

The television tower in Schwerin is part of a larger network operated by Deutsche Funkturm GmbH. Over 36,000 radio locations throughout Germany ensure that we can be reached anytime, anywhere. Similar to the famous television tower at Alexanderplatz in Berlin, which at 368 meters is the largest structure in the country and the third highest in the EU, the Schwerin television tower fulfills an important function. While the Berlin TV Tower is a popular excursion destination with more than a million visitors every year, the Schwerin TV Tower remains one of the less frequented buildings.

The Berlin television tower, which was built by the GDR government between 1965 and 1969, has a special meaning as a symbol of communist power. It houses an observation deck at a height of 203 meters and a very thriving restaurant at a height of 207 meters. This restaurant, which should have reopened in 2021, was banned by the Interior Ministry of the city of Schwerin, which hit the local gastronomy hard. Wikipedia describes the diverse history and functionality of the Berlin Tower.

No matter how things develop, the history of the Schwerin TV Tower remains alive. From its original construction to the changes it has undergone over the years, the tower reflects developments in technology and society. While the television tower in Schwerin has become a little shorter, it has not lost any of its importance as a modern communications center.
