A special day for the Protestant parishes in Schwerin and their parishioners: On Sunday, June 22nd, the first baptismal festival of the five Schwerink communities took place on the picturesque Zipporfer Strand. Under the motto "Baptism - why not outside on the beach or in the lake ...", numerous families and friends gathered to witness 30 baptisms. With a colorful mix of children, adolescents and adults aged a few months to 74 years, it was a festival of life and community. This is reported by the SVZ

In bright summer weather, the participants experienced a moving service, which was led by the cathedral preacher Güntzel Schmidt. He emphasized the blessing that the baptisms received, and the special atmosphere of the festival was also noticeably valued by everyone. The event was organized by a dedicated group of volunteers and a confirmation group that prepared individual baptism candles for every baptized.

happy festival on the beach

The opportunity was particularly touching to carry out the baptisms directly in the Schweriner See. The beach visitors watched curiously when was baptized on the shore with sea water. The frame of the festival was rounded off by a large coffee table, to which all baptists and their relatives were invited. Pastor Silke Draeger emphasized the exchange and new acquaintances that were created on this special day. With a total of around 9,200 parishioners in the five municipalities, the importance of such baptisms is becoming increasingly clear.

The demand for baptisms, which usually take place outside, has risen sharply in recent years. Other Evangelical parishes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have also planned baptisms in the coming weeks to give families the opportunity to have their children baptized in an unconventional and solemn atmosphere. According to Church MV are tapped in Plau am See, in Groß Trebbow and in Kurzen Trechow.

modern baptism for modern families

The design of baptism has changed in recent years. Instead of classic church stays, more and more families want the outdoor celebrations. Regina Sommer, theologian at the University of Marburg, names this development in her study on the changed baptism practice. Families want individual design options that meet their personal needs. It is becoming increasingly important that the celebrations are based on the challenges of being a parent and respond to the individual experiences of the baptisms. Inform the ekd .

These new baptism trends show that the churches react to the wishes of the communities and create a comprehensive range of baptisms that meet the current needs. The baptismal practice is becoming more diverse, and the festival on Zippendorfer Strand is a wonderful example. Here, where tradition and modern wishes go hand in hand, baptism becomes an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
