Bright sky: 30 baptisms on Schwerin beach celebrate life!

A special day for the Protestant parishes in Schwerin and their parishioners: On Sunday, June 22nd, the first baptism ceremony of the five Schwerin parishes took place on the picturesque Zippendorfer Strand. Under the motto “Baptism – Why not outside on the beach or in the lake…” numerous families and friends gathered to witness 30 baptisms. With a colorful mix of children, young people and adults aged between a few months and 74 years, it was a celebration of life and community. This is reported by the SVZ.

In bright summer weather, the participants experienced a moving service led by the cathedral preacher Güntzel Schmidt. He emphasized the blessing that those being baptized received, and the special atmosphere of the festival was also noticeably appreciated by everyone. The event was organized by a dedicated group of volunteers and a confirmation group who prepared individual baptismal candles for each candidate.

Happy festive atmosphere on the beach

What was particularly touching was the opportunity to carry out the baptisms directly in Lake Schwerin. Beachgoers watched curiously as baptisms took place on the shore with sea water. The celebration was rounded off with a large coffee table to which all those being baptized and their relatives were invited. Pastor Silke Draeger highlighted the exchange and new acquaintances that were made on this special day. With a total of around 9,200 community members in the five communities, the importance of such baptismal celebrations is becoming increasingly clear.

The demand for baptisms, which usually take place outside, has increased significantly in recent years. Other Protestant parishes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have also planned baptismal celebrations in the coming weeks to give families the opportunity to have their children baptized in an unconventional and celebratory atmosphere. Loud Church MV There are baptismal celebrations in Plau am See, Groß Trebbow and Kurzen Trechow, among others.

Modern baptism for modern families

The design of baptism has changed in recent years. Instead of traditional church stays, more and more families are looking for outdoor celebrations. Regina Sommer, a theologian at the University of Marburg, mentions this development in her study on changing baptismal practices. Families want individual design options that meet their personal needs. It is becoming increasingly important that the celebrations take up the challenges of being a parent and respond to the individual experiences of those being baptized. Inform them EKD.

These new trends in baptism show that churches are responding to the wishes of communities and creating a comprehensive range of baptism celebrations that meet current needs. Baptism practices are becoming more diverse, and the festival on Zippendorfer Strand is a wonderful example of this. Here, where tradition and modern wishes go hand in hand, the baptism becomes an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
