Dispute over bratwurst: municipal utilities stop snack bar operations on Rabbitwerder!
On Sunday morning, Stadtwerke Schwerin had to reschedule the popular Stadtwerke beach festival on Rabbitwerder at short notice. Due to an officially ordered sales stop, which was triggered by a hygiene inspection on Friday, the explosively anticipated bratwurst from the island snack bar fell flat. Instead, the “island baker” Erik Herrmann stepped in and offered bread, coffee and cake. nnn reports that ...
The island's tenant, Rüdiger Kopplin, makes serious allegations against the city of Schwerin. He believes that the check was aimed specifically at him and also cites an infestation of mice as an unpleasant circumstance. His accusations are not unfounded; Kopplin feels pushed into a corner by the city because, due to defects known to the landlord, he is now stuck with purchased meat that is at risk of spoiling. The sales ban is not his only problem - in order to get permission for resale, extensive measures such as disinfection and an inspection by experts are necessary.
Legal battle unfolds
The conflict between Kopplin and the city of Schwerin goes beyond the short-term challenges of the festival. In fact, he's at the center of an upcoming lawsuit after the city terminated Kopplin's lease in the wake of the menu. Captain Rüdiger Kopplin, who has been managing the island since July 2020, sees himself as a legal contractual partner until 2030 and is sure that the city acted without a legal basis. The city properly terminated the contract in June 2024, but Kopplin is of the opinion that the reasons for termination, including breaches of duty and failure to keep investment commitments, do not apply. The Schwerin District Court will decide whether the termination of the contract was legal while Kopplin is in a court lounge.
The future of Rabbitwerder
The current developments cast a shadow over the future of Rabbitwerder. The city of Schwerin is constantly planning to develop a new perspective for the island and recently invested 4.2 million euros in port renovation. Nevertheless, the inn remains empty and the planned development is in danger of being delayed by the legal dispute. Bernd Nottebaum, a city department head, regrets the escalation, which may also affect the interest of up to 15 potential investors from different federal states.
In addition, the lake terrace is closed for traffic safety reasons, which further complicates the situation on site. The impact of the dispute is both legal and economic - and the uncertainty could make gastronomic operations on the island impossible for the time being.
In a broader context, public utilities in Germany are under considerable pressure from complex legal requirements and growing bureaucratic hurdles. According to the 2025 municipal utility study, regulatory pressure is a major obstacle in the transformation to a climate-neutral energy supply. EY reports that ... Therefore, clear political framework conditions and less bureaucracy are crucial for the future of the municipal utilities and consequently also for projects like the one in Rabbitwerder.
The situation remains tense and all eyes are now on the district court while the Schwerin public utilities and Rüdiger Kopplin wrestle with each other.
