In Hohenzieritz, a small town with little through-traffic, many residents are concerned. The village road, which runs through the heart of the village, is the only road without a speed limit. This leads to increased speeding, which puts both children and pedestrians at risk. Around 40 residents came together and started collecting signatures to reduce the maximum speed limit to 30 km/h. The initiative shows how important road safety is to citizens and how necessary measures are to protect road users, as RechtAktuell reports.
The situation in Hohenzieritz is particularly critical because important facilities such as bus stops, the village pond and the community playground are located directly on the village street. Residents complain about driving too fast and are calling for restrictive regulations. The situation is particularly worrying for children, cyclists and walkers who travel here every day. Due to its proximity to the Luisen memorial and the castle park, the place is also a popular excursion destination, which attracts additional traffic.
Disagreements in the local council
Mayor Peter Strobl has spoken out in favor of reducing the speed limit. However, a corresponding proposal, which was discussed in August 2024, did not find a majority in the municipal council. Some residents, particularly at the back of the village road, oppose a speed limit because they fear a possible increase in travel time.
In the meantime, the local council has agreed to set up a digital display board that shows the speed of passing vehicles. This display board will be installed at rotating locations throughout the community and will display grim emoticons for drivers who do not obey the speed limit and smiling emoticons for those who obey the rules. Costing 1,500 euros, the board has already been ordered and is intended to help raise awareness of speeding.
