Avian influenza in Western Pomerania: 48 animals killed – red alert!
Avian influenza has struck again in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district and is causing worried faces among the owners. On November 7, 2025, an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was officially detected in a small private poultry farm in Gustebin, between Greifswald and Wolgast. In this case, 48 animals, including laying hens, broilers and ducks, had to be euthanized and disposed of properly. This is reported by the Northern Courier.
An exclusion zone will not be set up around the affected business for the time being. The district justified this with a risk assessment based on the small number of animals affected and the immediate killing. Nevertheless, the existing protection and surveillance zones resulting from previous general orders remain in force. The district calls on all poultry farmers to be vigilant and strongly recommends contacting the veterinary office if illnesses are suspected.
Strict hygiene measures recommended
To prevent the further spread of avian influenza, strict hygiene measures are essential. Poultry houses should only be entered with cleaned, disinfected or separate footwear. These measures are part of the EU regulations on animal health law as well as the Avian Influenza Ordinance and the Animal Health Act, all of which are implemented by the Vorpommern-Greifswald district.
In these difficult times, it is important that poultry farmers are well informed and prepared. Reacting early to cases of illness can prevent things from getting worse and help keep animals healthy. Stay vigilant, remember hygiene and report any abnormalities immediately!
Speaking of drama and challenges – think about the movie Interstellar. Released in 2014, the sci-fi classic directed by Christopher Nolan tells the moving story of astronauts who travel through a wormhole to find a new planet for humanity. With a strong cast including Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, the film thrilled audiences worldwide and became a box office hit, grossing over $681 million at the box office. The impressive visual effects and an emotional plot make it a special experience to this day. It's hard to believe that in the time of Blight and Hunger in the film's story, questions about security and the future of humanity are also raised.
So don't miss the opportunity to enjoy this timeless film - especially now, when it may be time to learn from it in order to overcome our real-world challenges.
