The Wallensteinage have a long tradition: for the first time this festival was celebrated in 1825, and with a few exceptions it took place until 1945. After a long break during the GDR period, tradition returned in 1991 and has been celebrated annually since then. The festival traditionally starts with the mockpings, a legend of winds on the city walls, and is solemnly opened by the historical figure Lambert Steinwich, who was mayor during the siege. A parade in magnificent historical costumes moves through the old town to the old market, where market drives begin.
