Neubrandenburg has a new police chief: Arne Wurzler is here!
In Neubrandenburg there is a breath of fresh air at the police headquarters: Arne Wurzler, 49 years old, has been officially appointed as the new police chief. This decision came 100 days after Thomas Dabel's retirement and was announced by Interior Minister Christian Pegel (SPD) on Thursday. Wurzler, who has been leading the business as senior police director since June 18, brings broad professional expertise and many years of experience in the police service. In the future, he will manage around 2,000 employees at the Neubrandenburg police headquarters and will be responsible for a catchment area that includes almost 700,000 residents in the Mecklenburg Lake District, Vorpommern-Greifswald and Vorpommern-Rügen districts. According to Nordkurier Wurzler was born in Schwerin and is the father of three children and is also married.
Wurzler's impressive professional career took him through various positions, including the Ministry of the Interior, the police headquarters and the State Criminal Police Office. He is widely appreciated for his clear leadership style, team orientation and sense of responsibility, as Presseportal confirms. His first big project will be the handover of the new police center in Neubrandenburg, which is to be built on the Lindenberg. The construction, which is estimated at an impressive 56 million euros, is scheduled to be completed by summer 2026 and will offer a net area of around 10,000 square meters.
The challenges of the police
The police play an indispensable role in the security of citizens and are recognized as part of state power in Germany. It is divided into various functions and areas, ranging from the uniformed police to the criminal investigation department. A look at Statista shows that the tasks can vary greatly depending on the police department. While the police are primarily responsible for averting threats, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) takes on central tasks in international investigations.
There is currently a particular focus on the challenges facing the police. A shortage of personnel and an increasing willingness to use violence against police officers are among the major stress points. Despite a relatively high level of trust in the police, which stood at 77% in spring 2023, surveys show a worrying decline in recent years. This is further reinforced by suspected right-wing extremist cases in security authorities and controversial official actions, which often involve the death of people.
With Arne Wurzler at the head of the police headquarters in Neubrandenburg, many are hoping for a fresh, positive course in police work. It remains to be seen how the new challenges can be overcome under his leadership and whether the country's police can regain their shattered trust.
