New district road opened between Loitz and Sassen: Where are the bus shelters?

On Monday morning, an important milestone for traffic development in the Peenetal/Loitz district was reached: the first construction phase of the VG8 district road was ceremoniously handed over. This renovation measure extends over four kilometers from the junction of the B194 near Loitz to the town of Sassen, junction at Wiesenstraße. The costs of around one million euros were well invested in renewing the road surface using modern asphalt construction and adapting the shoulders. In addition, four new bus stops were built, which will significantly improve connections to public transport in the future. However, the bus shelters at these stops near Treuen have not yet been installed and their installation will take place soon, as nordkurier.de reports.

As part of a new EU directive, the bus stops are directly adjacent to the edge of the road, which means that the previous stop pockets are no longer required. This measure not only makes waiting for the bus more comfortable, but also increases safety for passengers. The mayors of Sassen-Trantow and Loitz were consistently positive about the construction project and its successful implementation.

Sustainable transport planning and other projects

The next construction phases of the VG8 between Loitz and Dersekow are scheduled to begin in 2026, although the through-roads will not be renovated. Instead, the renovation will be carried out in Sassen up to the Wiesenweg junction. These measures are part of a comprehensive road construction program in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. As [ndr.de](https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/mecklenburg-vorpommern/Bauprogramm-MV-AST-Diese-Strassen-und-Radwege- Werden-erneuert,bauprogramm102.html) reports, investments of around 171.1 million euros were approved for 2024 to renew both federal and state roads and cycle paths.

The State Secretary for Transport Ines Jesse and René Firgt, the director of the State Office for Road Construction and Transport, emphasize the need for renovations, as roads are constantly exposed to wear and tear. In the coming year, almost 100 million euros will flow into federal highways to make necessary improvements.

Infrastructure as a key to development

The focus of the measures is not only on improving roads, but also on promoting economic development in the coastal area. To this end, the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 holds out the prospect of numerous expansion and new construction projects that are also important for the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania region. Various construction projects such as the expansion of the B96, the Wolgast bypass or the renovation of through-roads in smaller communities play a central role. The financing is largely provided by federal funds, as explained on wirtschaft-mv.de.

The openness to digital solutions, such as the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to manage planning data, shows that planning is also being modernized to ensure smooth implementation. Despite the challenges, such as the shortage of skilled workers and the need for environmental impact assessments, there is great hope that these projects will have a long-term positive impact on tourism, freight transport and the regional economy.
