Racist attacks on Berlin elementary school students during a school trip!

A sixth-grade class trip from Berlin-Kreuzberg to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ended in a nightmare when the students were confronted with frightening racist remarks during their stay. According to Ostsee Zeitung it was a group of students from Brandenburg who were massively offensive, while a teacher from the Kreuzberg class reported the incident attended. Male students in particular, including many with a migrant background, were the target of these verbal attacks.

The parents and school management of the Berlin students were only informed about the incidents after they returned. The Berlin Senate Education Administration is in close contact with the school and has already offered support for the children affected. Berlin's Green MP Ario Mirzaie emphasized in a statement that such attacks should not be tolerated and called for consequences. The Minister of Education in Brandenburg is now under pressure to clarify the incidents.

Investigations and reactions

In another incident that also caused a stir this month, the state security agency is investigating racist insults and threats against a Berlin school class that was targeted by partying groups from the region during their stay at a holiday resort in Heidesee. Süddeutsche Zeitung reported that 28 suspects were identified, although the exact roles are still unclear.

The incident was made particularly explosive by the fact that some of the children affected were visibly Muslim and wore headscarves. After the racist insults, a teacher in the class was informed about the incident by the parents and accompanied the students on the journey home to Berlin to ensure that no further escalations took place.

Riots and moment of shock

The students, several of them only 15 to 16 years old, reported their shock at this form of xenophobia, which they had not experienced in their everyday life in Berlin. One father said that many children were extremely affected and frightened, while the chairman of the Berlin State Parents' Committee, Norman Heise, regretted that the school had to leave early to prevent something worse from happening.

The company that operates the holiday resort has now banned the person who booked the group and is supporting the police investigation. The incident is also being viewed critically by Brandenburg's Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke, who has condemned it as repulsive. He emphasized that racism and extremism must not be subject to tolerance in Brandenburg.

The incidents shed a disturbing light on society's problems in dealing with diversity and the necessary protection of young people. It remains to be seen how these events will influence school policy in Brandenburg and raising awareness of racism in schools.
