Sensational find in the Peenetal: rediscovery of the small water hose!
In a valuable nature reserve in the heart of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, over 75 nature lovers went on a guided hike led by Dr. Frank Hennicke made fascinating discoveries. At the meeting in Gützkow-Liebenthal at the Swinow Bridge, organized by the Peenetal River Landscape Nature Park Administration and the Peenetal Support Association, the participants experienced the impressive beauties of the Peenetal. As reported by uckermarkkurier.de, Dr. Hennicke emphasized the importance of connecting different moor types, which are of central importance for the area's ecosystem.
The Peenetal River Landscape Nature Park covers 33,390 hectares and was placed under protection in 2011. It extends from the Peenetal near Dargun to the mouth of the Peene and the western parts of the Stettiner Lagoon. The special thing about the Peenetal: It was created around 12,000 years ago at the end of the Vistula Ice Age and is now one of the last undeveloped rivers in Germany, as the website of the Naturpark highlights.
Impressive nature experiences
The approximately 73 participants were divided into three groups, which hiked through the nature reserve at different times. Ornithologists accompanied the bird lovers and offered exciting insights into the world of birds. The sightings included impressive species such as field and reed whorls, sea eagles and ospreys as well as the red-backed shrikes, which can grow up to 30 centimeters in size. Particularly noteworthy was the observation of courting males of the marsh bird snipe, also known as the “sky goat”.
One of the groups also discovered beaver cuts on the Swinow, a body of water that winds over 23 km from Karlsburg to the Peene. The participants were among the lucky ones who also spotted three different types of meadow orchids - including the broad-leaved, stiff-leaved and the white-yellow orchid. Another highlight was the discovery of the small water hose, one of the last locations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with around 60 specimens. The carnivorous plant requires nutrient-poor, boggy swamp areas and was already extinct in Western Pomerania-Greifswald 20 years ago.
A paradise for nature lovers
The Peene river landscape covers around 20,000 hectares and is considered one of the largest contiguous fen areas in Central and Western Europe. Not only are rare moor plants and animals found here, but also a variety of bird species. Three species of eagles and three species of terns breed in the Peenetal. These unique conditions make the Peene an Eldorado for nature lovers and scientists.
