Scandalous discovery: animal carcasses on the A20 – police are looking for witnesses!
In a strange incident, animal remains along Autobahn 20 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are causing a stir. On Tuesday, the police were alerted after around 25 plastic bags were discovered on the grass verge between the Tribsees and Grimmen-West exits. The sacks, which were placed near the town of Gransebieth, contain the remains of animals, including possibly sheep, as local investigators suspect based on the remains of fur. Police have asked for information from witnesses who may have seen the bags being disposed of.
This discovery sheds light on the issue of proper disposal of animal byproducts. According to the Bundestag, the responsible authorities are obliged to process and dispose of such materials in accordance with the Animal By-Products Disposal Act. When the law was last updated on December 22, 2011, a clear framework for the disposal of animal by-products was established. This includes the collection, storage and treatment of these residues that are not suitable for human consumption.
Criteria for animal by-products
According to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, animal by-products are materials that arise from slaughter or milk production and are not considered edible. These products can be divided into different categories:
- Kategorie 1: Muss durch Verbrennung oder Deponierung beseitigt werden.
- Kategorie 2: Kann kompostiert oder zur Herstellung organischer Düngemittel verwendet werden.
- Kategorie 3: Kann unter bestimmten Auflagen zur Herstellung von Futtermitteln verwendet werden.
Previous crises, such as foot and mouth disease, or BSE, have shown that improper handling of these materials can have significant health and economic consequences. That's why regulation is of the utmost importance. Proper disposal and processing of animal byproducts is critical to minimizing health risks to humans and animals as well as environmental damage.
The police investigation is ongoing under suspicion of a possible violation of the Animal By-Products Disposal Act. It remains to be seen whether local authorities will receive further tips or information from the public. Given the complex nature of the problem, the sustainable and safe use of animal by-products, as provided for by the law, is of enormous importance for society.
