Severe weather warning for MV: Heavy rain and possible flooding!

On July 21, 2025, northern Germany will face an uncomfortable change in the weather. Heavy rainfall, with some thunderstorms, was announced in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The region is preparing for possible local flooding and full basements, such as Zeit.de reported. Districts such as Vorpommern-Greifswald and Mecklenburgische Seenplatte have strengthened their operations control centers in order to be prepared for the expected operations.

Precise forecasting is anything but easy, and the German Weather Service warns of heavy rainfall that could reach up to 70 liters per square meter. Rostock, Western Pomerania-Rügen and Western Pomerania-Greifswald are particularly affected. “Heavy rain amounts of between 30 and 60 liters per square meter are to be expected, locally even up to 100 liters within 6 to 12 hours,” according to the forecast NDR.de.

Special precautions

In order to counteract the possible consequences of the storm, the official and district military leadership was sensitized. Despite the impending masses of water, the Mecklenburg Lake District is currently not one of the flood areas, as the water levels in the lakes are currently still unremarkable. Nevertheless, the local population should be warned that there may be unexpected rainfall in the next few hours.

The night before July 21st. Severe thunderstorms were already knocking on the doors of northern Germany, and the severe weather warning applies to the entire region. Gusts of up to 85 km/h can also occur and hail cannot be ruled out. Temperatures fluctuate between 21 and 26 degrees, although significantly humid weather can be expected, especially in inland areas.

Event postponements and further weather developments

The opening of the Special Olympics MV, which was originally supposed to take place outside, was moved to the Rostock Hanseatic Fair. Over 200 athletes with disabilities will compete in various sports until Wednesday. This shows how important it is to keep the event calendar under control even when the weather is unfavorable.

Changeable weather conditions are forecast for the coming days. On Tuesday we can expect a combination of clouds and sunshine, although showers and thunderstorms are possible again. The sky will become friendlier until Wednesday, but ultimately the rainy season doesn't seem to be over.

Overall, northern Germany is facing challenging weather conditions. Therefore: safety comes first! Protect yourself from lightning strikes and have first aid supplies ready.
