Wolgast in the debt dilemma: Celebrate or save on the Runge anniversary?

Wolgast, the charming town on the Baltic Sea coast, is facing an exciting but challenging time. On November 11, 2025, the 250th anniversary of the famous painter Philipp Otto Runge will be celebrated. But while anticipation for the celebrations grows, one also has to contend with the financial difficulties plaguing the city. The Wolgaster Kulturgesellschaft gGmbH has already initiated plans for a big festival, but the debate about financing is raging.

The estimated cost of the celebrations raises questions. While the maximum version, which includes two professional plays in a theater tent at the city harbor, is estimated at around 388,000 euros, the minimum version is significantly cheaper at 164,000 euros, but also less expensive. In the city council there are both supporters and critics of the plans. Holger Kostmann from the AfD has expressed concerns about the high debts and suggests integrating the annual meeting into the already planned cultural nights. Christoph Eigbrecht from Citizens for Wolgast would like a public presentation of the ideas before a decision is made. On the other hand, Sebastian Gabriel from the CDU emphasizes the importance of such events for the population, while Ralf Pens, also from the CDU, criticizes the fact that Wolgast is not associated enough with Runge.

Financial challenges

The city is facing an enormous mountain of debt, which will amount to around 8 million euros this year and could grow to over 36 million euros by the end of 2028. City treasurer Stefanie Egleder-Mattern emphasizes that, despite the need for austerity, life in the city should not be strangled. Arne Koplin from KfW warned against excessive austerity policies that could endanger urban development, which could increase the concerns of many citizens.

Wolgast is often praised for its numerous celebrations that attract both locals and tourists. But today's picture is clouded by the worrying financial situation. How will the city manage to manage the balancing act between holding an appropriate anniversary celebration and dealing with the burdensome debts?

The future of the city

Those responsible are faced with a difficult decision that may have far-reaching consequences for culture and city life.
