The situation surrounding child protection in the Vorpommern-Rügen district shows a worrying trend. Last year, the youth welfare office received 476 emergency calls about possible child welfare threats, affecting 721 children. This is reported by the Baltic Sea newspaper. It is alarming that in around one in six cases an acute risk was identified, leading to children being taken into care or protection plans being drawn up. The cities of Stralsund and the island of Rügen, where most cases were reported, are particularly badly affected.

A closer look at the numbers shows that in 2023 a total of 185 children were in need and had to be taken from their families. The number of people taken into care rose from 169 in 2022 to 263 in 2023 - a development that has significantly increased the pressure on the aid and care facilities. Almost half of the children affected come from Stralsund, while a quarter each come from the island of Rügen and from North Western Pomerania.
