GDR holiday paradise in danger: Gera holiday camp on the brink of closure!

In the middle of the picturesque landscape of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the “Gera company holiday camp” on Rügen, a former GDR holiday resort that represents an important cultural and historical bridge to the past. As Thüringen24 reports, this holiday village is not only a place for relaxation, but also a living piece of history that preserves memories and stories of past generations.

The holiday camp, which was once intended for workers and their families, now attracts holidaymakers from all over Germany, including many Thuringians. Guests stay in original GDR bungalows and can immerse themselves in the everyday culture of the former GDR. Operator Candy Dassler, who took over and restored the facility in 2017, ensures that the authentic charm of the warehouse is preserved.

Threat to cultural assets

But the future of the company holiday camp is in jeopardy. The camp is currently facing serious problems, particularly due to a new sanitary block in the holiday village of Bakenberg. The authorities view this as a “replacement new building” and have imposed immediate enforcement, which means that the use of the new sanitary building is prohibited. This could have drastic consequences for operations, as the building inspectorate is also planning to close the “deli Ost-Seekiosk” snack bar and the Trabant warehouse.

The threat of fines of 17,500 euros for non-compliance with the requirements could force the operator to make far-reaching changes. Dassler sees this as a massive intervention in the concept of the holiday camp and has legitimate concerns that the original GDR character of the facility could be lost through demolition work and the installation of modern sanitary facilities. Such changes would not only jeopardize the charm of the camp, but also the spirit of the past that the camp represents.

Petition to preserve the camp

Closure or a change of operator could seriously endanger the cultural heritage. There are efforts to improve the situation, including through a petition that seeks to preserve the Gera company holiday camp. Supporters are enthusiastic about the camp's cultural heritage, which acts as a social and cultural experience for locals and holidaymakers alike. A call for support for the petition is already being made to ensure that future generations have the opportunity to experience and understand history first hand.

The stories and memories that this holiday camp preserves are important not only for the people in the region, but for all of German history. Thüringen24 highlights that the memories of the GDR are visible in Thuringia and live on through places like this holiday camp. The responsibility to preserve this history now lies in the hands of the entire community.

It remains to be seen whether the challenges can ultimately be overcome. But one thing is certain: preserving the “Gera company holiday camp” would not only be a victory for part of the cultural heritage, but also a message against the loss of identity and history.

Therefore, support the petition and help preserve this piece of history for the future. Thuringia24 and Change.org call on all interested parties to support the preservation of this valuable facility.
