Günter Sass from Barth: At 100 years old, active and fit like a fisherman!

Günter Sass from Barth is celebrating his 100th birthday today, October 5th. His impressive life is shaped by a variety of experiences that have made him the person he is today. Sass started as an 8th grade school leaver and developed from an apprentice aircraft builder to a fighter pilot to a valued locksmith and instructor. As a master in agricultural machinery and shipbuilding, he also contributed to advancing technical progress. These diverse stages of life are a source of inspiration for many.

While his life story is touching, it is also noticeable that Sass remains physically fit despite his old age, even if he is plagued by some health problems. He struggles with declining hearing, reduced visual acuity and osteoarthritis in his legs and hip joints. This year, osteoarthritis prevented him from taking his daily bike rides to the fishing club, which he always enjoyed.

A life in motion

Sass uses an exercise bike to stay active, but refuses to use an electric scooter. With the help of a second handrail, he masters the stairs in his home. He receives support from his son Wulf and daughter-in-law Christel, who accompany and help him in everyday life. Sass often prepares his own food and, depending on his mood, also takes care of the household chores.

The 100-year-old firmly believes that his lifestyle of fresh air, healthy eating and a positive outlook on life has contributed to his old age. His preferences include fish, fruit and vegetables, and he never goes to bed later than 9:30 p.m. Daily walks with his late wife Edith and swimming in the lagoon or the Baltic Sea were also integral parts of his lifestyle.

The power of relationships

As countless centenarians around the world have reported, Sass's life reflects the importance of deep human relationships. Studies show that around 92% of people over 100 are satisfied with their lives and friendships play a central role in their well-being. According to the Pharmacy Umschau, many very old people, despite health restrictions, tend to have an optimistic attitude to life and enjoy the little everyday things in life. As role models in society, they often offer valuable insights into effective aging strategies.

Projects to promote healthy aging, which are also supported by the WHO, show how important gratitude and lifelong learning are for a fulfilling life in old age. In this context, Sass proves to be living proof of the principles of active aging that scientists are studying, promoting both physical and mental fitness.

Ultimately, Sass looks back on an eventful life that not only brought him to old age, but also a multitude of memories and experiences that he shares with his loved ones. It is not only his birthday, but also the day when many realize that a fulfilled life goes far beyond just old age.
