Danger of flooding on the Baltic Sea: Current water levels at a glance!

The weather situation on the Baltic Sea coast is currently tense, because today, November 7th, 2025, the water levels in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania rose sharply. The measuring stations in Wismar, Warnemünde, Althagen, Barth, Stralsund, Sassnitz and Greifswald, such as Baltic Sea Newspaper reported. The current conditions not only require attention, but also preparation for possible storm surges.

The situation should not be underestimated, especially since the forecasts predict a further increase in water levels in the coming days. Stralsund and the surrounding waters are particularly at risk, where an increase of up to 1.15 meters above the mean water level can be expected. According to NDR, the water levels could continue to rise by tomorrow at the latest, while a strong wind from the west to the north poses additional dangers.

The most important water levels at a glance

  • Mittleres Niedrigwasser (MNW): 407 cm in Warnemünde, gemessen über den Zeitraum 01.11.2010 bis 31.10.2020.
  • Mittleres Hochwasser (MHW): 617 cm in Warnemünde.
  • Höchster Hochwasserstand (HHW): 770 cm, gemessen am 13.11.1872.
  • Niedrigster Wasserstand (NNW): 332 cm, gemessen am 18.10.1967.

The classification of storm surges is also important in order to better assess the danger potential: A general storm surge is between 1.00 and 1.25 meters above the mean water level, while very severe storm surges exceed over 2.00 meters. This makes it clear that the warnings communicated by various bodies such as flood control centers or via warning apps and social media should be taken seriously. After all, a recent severe storm surge in October has already caused damage of more than 56 million euros, and the city of Sassnitz is asking for around 42 million euros to restore the infrastructure.

The reactions to the weather situation

The experienced meteorologist Stefan Kreibohm currently assesses the situation as slightly critical, but does not expect any dramatic consequences. In Greifswald in particular, the local barrier could be closed to prevent possible damage. The population is called upon to be attentive and to inform themselves about the current developments, which are regularly published on BSH. There you will not only find monthly reports on water levels and water temperatures, but also information on the current hydrological situation.

Looking ahead to the coming winter days, it is important to be careful. There have already been numerous accidents in several parts of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania due to slippery roads and strong winds. It is therefore to be hoped that the affected communities are well prepared for the challenges ahead and that everyone adheres to the warnings of the responsible authorities. The current situation on the Baltic Sea coast shows once again how important it is to pay attention to weather warnings and take action in good time.
