Young, strong and back in tourism: Rügen's new master bricklayer!

In the picturesque municipality of Rügen, a fresh wind is bringing with it new developments. Menke Loers from Mellnitz passed the exam to become a master bricklayer at just 19 years old and is now one of the youngest skilled workers in Germany. He will take the reins together with his father in a traditional Rügen construction company that has been in existence for 130 years in the fifth generation. An exciting time lies ahead and Loers is ready for the responsibility.

What are the tasks of a master bricklayer? According to the specialist information from berufsbild.com, they are central people in the construction industry and take on the management and organization of construction sites. Their role is crucial for new construction, conversion and renovation, and the highest precision is expected in the execution and coordination of construction teams. With a solid background from dual training and internships, Loers is ideally prepared to assert himself in this demanding professional field.

New opening in the island paradise

An exciting new opening also awaits visitors to the island: the listed building “Inselparadies” on the beach in Baabe recently reopened its doors after extensive renovation. It now operates as a café and bar under the name “Mynt”. The operators' goal here is to create a meeting place with authentic gastronomy. The building, built in 1968, blends harmoniously with its surroundings and offers a welcoming atmosphere for locals and tourists alike.

With a view to tourism development, the Binz municipal council recently decided to become actively involved in the Rügen tourism association again. This ends a nearly two-and-a-half-year rift sparked by a dispute over an LNG terminal. “We want to be actively involved in the reorientation of the association,” said a spokesman for the community. This marks an important step into the future of the region.

Initiatives for young people

Another notable step is being discussed in the Vorpommern-Rügen district: The proposal to introduce a compulsory elective subject in “firefighting” at secondary schools is intended to solve the fire brigade’s recruitment problems and arouse students’ interest in volunteer work. The district council will vote on July 21st so that the subject can be offered from the 2026/27 school year. Such initiatives are important to promote long-term volunteer work and bring society together.

There is also currently news from the Shell gas station on Heinrich-Heine-Ring: This is being modernized and is scheduled to reopen on August 18th. The last work took place around 14 years ago. Now it's time for a thorough refresh, which includes the roof, the shop and the wash boxes.

But who are the heroines and heroes?

A look at the local community also shows that heroic commitment is valued. Voting was opened as part of the OZ Firefighter Hero campaign. The current interim status shows:

  • Anne Berner (Freiwillige Feuerwehr Kröslin) – 34,2%
  • Tim Nahrstedt (Freiwillige Feuerwehr Kühlungsborn) – 32,6%
  • Gregor Wedig (Freiwillige Feuerwehr Niepars) – 19,4%
  • Michael Homuth (Freiwillige Feuerwehr Hornstorf) – 13,9%

The modern challenges in the construction industry and the initiatives to strengthen voluntary work are not mutually exclusive. Menke Loers shows that young craftsmanship and commitment can go hand in hand. The craft remains a future-proof profession with many career opportunities, and the development on the island of Rügen is the best proof of this.
