Free ferry rides for students: Discover Zingst by bike!

In the Lagoon region, especially in idyllic Barth, summer is finally getting going! The couple Ines and Werner Steffen from Wangerland/Ostfriesland are enjoying their penultimate day of vacation and have decided on an exciting bike tour to Darßer Weststrand. Luckily, the ferry MS “Stadt Barth” is available to shorten the route across the water. As the temperatures are somewhat cool, there are only a few passengers on board, but this doesn't dampen the mood. Captain Andreas Poschke informs the guests about the interesting features along the route, while the Steffens enjoy on the upper deck while others spend time in the cozy saloon.

The ferry runs regularly between Barth and Zingst and has several timetables that also take into account the needs of tourists. According to information from the Poschke shipping company There is a lot of activity during peak hours. During peak times, daily departures are scheduled at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Zingst in particular is crowded with cycle tourists who are looking forward to their adventures, as the parking spaces on the ferry quickly fill up.

Free access to the ferry for students

A notable aspect of the ferry service is the free offer for Barth students. The aim of this initiative is to protect kids from the dangers of road traffic and at the same time make them aware of nature, reports Baltic Sea newspaper. This measure is very popular and is supported by special group discounts for school classes or children's groups.

E-bikes on the rise

Another trend that affects ferry trips is e-bikes. These vehicles are becoming increasingly popular and allow passengers to chart their own course, regardless of wind direction. This has ensured that the parking spaces on the aft deck of the ferry are no longer fully booked as quickly as they were a few years ago. The Steffen couple themselves used their e-bike for the tour. This development is definitely positive for the shipping company, which is currently training two apprentices to become inland waterway boatmen.

The Poschke shipping company, which operates in Barth and Zingst, employs a total of 27 people and uses six ships for ferry traffic between Prerow and Stralsund. The cleanliness and efficiency of the ships are a trademark that is highly valued by passengers.
