Rosenlust in Putbus: German Rose Congress inspires visitors!
In the picturesque setting of Putbus on the island of Rügen, everything revolves around the queen of flowers. From June 26th to 29th, 2025, the city will host the annual conference of the German Rose Society e.V. Around 100 participants from the most remote corners of Germany will gather to celebrate the fascinating world of roses. What is particularly pleasing is that almost two thirds of the members come from the federal states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
But what awaits rose lovers in Putbus? A colorful program is on the agenda that ensures that participants not only learn a lot, but also have a good time. A highlight will be the ride on the “Racing Roland”, which rolls through the beautiful landscape of the island. Furthermore, the independent distillation of rose water and rose scents is on the agenda. The venerable Putbus Theater is hosting the rose experts' festive reception - a truly fitting atmosphere for such an event.
Putbus and his roses
The city of Putbus has made a name for itself. Known for its elegant white buildings and over 650 rose bushes from around 100 different varieties, it was named Rose City by the German Rose Society in 2018. Putbus owes this recognition not least to Prince Wilhelm Malte I, who placed standard roses in front of every house in the 19th century. A tradition that is still maintained today.
Since 2007, the care of the roses has been in the hands of the volunteer rose brigade of the Residenz- und Rosenstadt Putbus e.V. association. The dedication and passion of this group are clearly visible when you stroll through the streets decorated with roses.
The rose of the year selection
Another highlight in the rose calendar is the election of the most beautiful “Rose of the Year”, which takes place annually. The next award is scheduled for August 4, 2024, as part of the prince's 241st birthday. A festival that the residents and visitors of Putbus enjoy celebrating.
The German Rose Society not only promotes the heart of every rose lover, but also ensures that the history and culture surrounding the topic of roses remains alive. The annual congresses, like this one in Putbus, are an important part of deepening the exchange between members and strengthening cooperation.
What is particularly noteworthy is that this year Putbus is not only focusing on the beautiful flowers, but also on accessibility for all visitors. The city's website is designed according to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) and offers special features to provide a pleasant experience for people with different disabilities. From adapting the user interface for screen readers to providing special modes for the visually impaired to epilepsy-safe mode, everyone is thought of here.
The upcoming event promises not only a floral journey of discovery, but also a welcoming environment for everyone who wants to experience the magic of the rose. Ultimately, the congress in Putbus shows once again that roses are not just flowers, but part of a living tradition and community.
