Shipbuilding boom in Stralsund: New projects and areas available!
The shipyard landscape in Stralsund is in motion. Assembly hall 290, which was put into operation in 1997 as one of the largest halls in the world, is now available following the bankruptcy of Fosen Werft. This impressive hall stretches over 300 meters and has been used for various projects by the Strela Shiprepair company since its closure, including the container ship “Fenja”. But that's not all: Ostsee Zeitung reports that the halls are now also open to non-local companies, with the aim of using the space to use in the long term.
Loads of almost 1,000 tons can be easily handled in the hall, while the 270 meter long loading facility can transport goods weighing up to 100 tons. Strela Shiprepair invites interested companies to rent these valuable spaces on a project-specific basis for weeks, months or even longer. If necessary, Strela also provides skilled workers and necessary machines. With this initiative, Stralsund could gain importance in German shipbuilding, where demand for available shipbuilding space is currently high.
An open day
The shipbuilding market in Germany appears to be robust, but is also facing challenges. According to Statista, the value added in shipbuilding is expected to be 1.9 billion euros by the end of 2025, with an annual growth rate of 2.42% until 2029. Shipbuilding includes not only the construction of freighters and tankers, but also leisure boats, which are increasingly in demand. Environmental protection and sustainable technologies are key factors for the future. The strict EU regulations encourage environmentally friendly developments and reflect growing consumer interest in innovative watercraft. The cooperation between local shipyards, such as the interest group of shipbuilders from Stralsund, Bremen and Wismar, is a step towards tackling the challenges together and preparing the shipyards for the future. A new company with the working title “Stralsunder Schiffbaugesellschaft” will also be created in order to use the space in the long term. Negotiations with the city about the use of the Volkswerft business park are ongoing. Stralsund could therefore play a central role in German shipbuilding and benefit from the continued high demand for shipbuilding space.
