Shocking moment in Seedorf: VW drives illegally over the pier – child injured!
An incident that happened on Saturday, August 9th, around 11:30 a.m. in Seedorf on Rügen caused a stir: a VW Tiguan with a Plauen license plate drove on the wooden bridge there despite the ban. As a result, an eleven-year-old girl was slightly injured and a bicycle was also damaged. However, the driver of the vehicle was no longer on site when the police arrived. It is registered to a 58-year-old man. The investigation is now at a standstill as we are still looking for those responsible. The pedestrian bridge will remain closed to car traffic until further notice to avoid further incidents.
A similar incident in the region also affected the new pier in Timmendorfer Strand. A working platform on the shell of the pier, which is around 32 by 14 meters in size and weighs several hundred tons, has been torn away. The reasons for the platform being disconnected are currently under investigation. This platform suffered damage after striking the bridge's shell, and the bridge itself may also have been affected. It is also being investigated whether materials have entered the water and possibly caused water pollution. Recovery of the platform is expected to be difficult due to onshore winds and shallow water depth. The opening of the new pier, which will run four and a half kilometers across the Baltic Sea, was scheduled for September and cost around 11.8 million euros.
The importance of the pier
Piers are not only important for tourism, but they also contribute to the identity and quality of life of a region. The “Seebrücke” movement, which advocates for a human rights-based migration policy, has enjoyed great popularity in recent years. The activists are committed to creating security for refugees and are calling on cities and municipalities to declare themselves “safe havens”. Over 320 municipalities and cities have already taken this step to form a counter-voice to the federal government's current isolation policy. The initiative is supported by individuals from civil society and offers everyone the opportunity to get involved in local groups through events and activities. This friendly attitude is seen by many as a ray of hope in a time of rethinking about migration and its challenges, reports seebruecke.org.
These recent incidents should also raise awareness of the responsibility of drivers and those involved in construction. It is important that accidents like the ones that happened in Seedorf and Timmendorfer Strand do not become normal. Attentive citizens and timely action can help prevent injuries and damage and ensure the safety of everyone on and around the bridges.
