Serious bicycle accident on Hiddensee: woman critically injured!

On Tuesday, July 1st, a serious bicycle accident occurred on the picturesque island of Hiddensee, which moved the minds of the originals and visitors alike. Shortly before 3 p.m. there was a collision in Vitte when a 61-year-old islander overtook a group of cyclists. A 56-year-old man from Stralsund suddenly turned left, which led to the serious collision. The woman suffered serious injuries in the accident and was immediately flown to a clinic in a rescue helicopter, while the man suffered minor injuries. A worrying aspect of the incident is that both cyclists were not wearing helmets, which is alarming given the statistics surrounding bicycle accidents. According to Ostsee Zeitung this is not the first serious incident of this kind on the popular island.

Another serious accident occurred on Hiddensee on January 3rd of this year. A 38-year-old cyclist was seriously injured when he had to be flown to hospital in Greifswald in a fall on an electric bicycle. The accident was allegedly caused by an off-leash dog owned by a 59-year-old man. Here, too, the injured party was not wearing a helmet, which raises the question of how important it is to wear head protection when cycling on Hiddensee. Police Chief Moritz points out that he has had to register a total of three serious bicycle accidents on the island since he took up duty, which is cause for concern. The police are also appealing to cyclists, especially e-bike users, to wear helmets to minimize the risk of head injuries, as Hansestadt Stralsund reports.

Helmet culture put to the test

The helmet quota in Germany is another exciting topic that should not be ignored. In 2021, just under 32% of cyclists regularly wore a helmet, an increase of 5% compared to the previous year. What is particularly worrying is that among 11 to 16 year olds, only 38% wear a helmet - a decrease of 16%. This is all the more alarming because scientific studies, such as those presented on the website ich-trag-helm.de, show that helmets can reduce head injuries in accidents by 20-80%.

These statistics should serve as a wake-up call for all cyclists, especially older generations and Pedelec users, who are statistically at greatest risk of serious injury in accidents. The priority should be on wearing helmets, as scientific evidence shows that helmet wearers most often suffer only minor head injuries. At a time when cycling is booming, it is essential that both tourists and locals ensure their safety.

The police, who once again point out that dogs must be kept on a leash on Hiddensee, warn that the responsible behavior of all road users is crucial for safety. The series of serious accidents should make us all think - not only about road safety, but also about the personal responsibility that each individual bears. In summary: a helmet can save lives and make cycling safer.
