Serious accident on Rügen: cyclist hit by car and injured

On Friday, July 4th, there was a serious traffic accident in Rambin on the island of Rügen. An 89-year-old driver crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with a 62-year-old cyclist. The cyclist suffered serious injuries and was immediately taken to Stralsund Hospital. Fortunately, another cyclist who tried to avoid a collision was uninjured and only ended up in a ditch. The driver himself was unharmed in the incident, but his vehicle was no longer drivable after the collision and had to be towed away. The estimated material damage amounts to around 5,000 euros. The police seized the driver's license at the scene of the accident and have initiated an investigation on suspicion of endangering road traffic Baltic Sea newspaper reported.

This incident adds to worrying statistics. According to a current study by insurers' accident research (UDV), cyclists are becoming more and more likely to have accidents without external influence. Investigations into hit-and-run accidents

Parallel to this accident, another case on Rügen is being investigated. A 47-year-old convertible driver is suspected of intentionally hitting a 13-year-old boy from Bremen on August 14th. The incident occurred near a youth hostel when the boy was out with his classmates. According to reports, after provocation, the driver turned the car around and hit the boy head-on. He was then carried to the youth hostel by his friends. The Stralsund public prosecutor's office plans to revoke the driver's driver's license and he is being investigated for hit-and-run and serious bodily harm. Accidents like these highlight how dangerous the roads are for cyclists. Older people in particular are disproportionately affected, not only when cycling, but also in other traffic situations. This development is not just a local problem, but a problem for society as a whole that should be urgently addressed.
