In the municipality of Binz, which is located in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, a steadily growing wild boar population is causing excitement. For several weeks now, the animals, which are primarily active at night, have been increasingly traveling in populated areas. Putbuser Strasse, Zinglingstrasse, Rabenstrasse and Potenberg are particularly affected, where damage to gardens and green spaces has already been found. This situation is favored by the high number of young offspring and the rich food supply, as NDR reports.

The population of wild boars in Europe is continuously increasing, which is due in particular to mild winters, intensive crop production and frequent fattening years. These factors increase the chances of survival for the animals, especially the young ones that are born in spring. But unfortunate weather conditions can quickly lead to a decline. As Environmental Analyzes explains, without hunting, wild boar numbers could increase sixfold within a year.

Conflicts with people

The increasing proximity to human settlement areas often leads to conflicts. Such conflicts usually arise from fear, overprotective behavior of the Bachs towards their descendants or through provocative actions on the part of humans. Wild boars live in groups, the so-called herds, and show aggressive behavior, especially during the breeding season, which takes place in autumn. In order to defuse the situation, extensive hunting measures have already been initiated. Almost 30 wild boars have already been shot, but shooting near residential buildings is not permitted for safety reasons. In order to direct the animals to safe places, targeted feeding stations are set up. Residents are also urged to exercise caution: keep trash containers closed and avoid outdoor food sources.

Across the region, the risk of accidents involving wildlife has increased slightly over the past year. The situation is particularly alarming in Ludwigslust-Parchim, where almost every second accident is caused by wild boars. It is therefore advised to remain calm during encounters and to inform the authorities of any incidents.

The challenges posed by wild boars in Binz are part of a larger trend. If you react correctly, the conflicts can be alleviated. The key is understanding these animals and adhering to property protection measures such as solid fencing and responsible waste disposal. This is the only way to create harmonious coexistence between humans and wild animals.
