Winter barley harvest in MV: Less yield by drought threatens!

Winter barley harvest in MV: Less yield by drought threatens!

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Deutschland - What is happening in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania? A new harvest cycle has started because the farmers in the region start today, on July 1, 2025, with the harvest of winter barley. This is grown on almost 140,000 hectares, but the signs are not too good: the yields are expected to be less than in the previous year, which is mainly due to the continued drought, such as the Tagesschau reported. Accordingly, farmers have to adapt their crop expectations.

Although the winter cereal has survived the turn of the year well, there are troubling reports about the soil conditions: the deep soil layers have remained sometimes dry, which leads to thin stocks, especially in the sandy Uecker-Randow region and parts of the lake plate. The farmers had a "good hand" in previous years, because in 2024 an average of 79 decitons per hectare was reached, thus surpassing the six -year average of 75 decitons, as the Statistical State Office MV also confirms.

harvest expectations and conditions

The earnings fluctuations are high this year, especially depending on the ground quality. So it is no wonder that farmers get nervous. According to the state farmers' association, there are currently no price increases in winter barley, which does not necessarily make the situation easier. In the coming weeks, rapeseed and wheat will be harvested that will soon follow.

But there are also bright spots: The statistics show that in 2024 a total of 3.79 million tons of grain and 0.62 million tons of winter rapeseed were harvested, which was above the six-year average. This gives hope that farmers can remain optimistic despite the adverse circumstances. For the coming months, a hectare yield of around 74 decitons for grain types will be forecast. That is 5 percent above the six -year average.

outlook for the future

The location remains tense, but there are positive trends: particularly high hectares are reported for oats and also for summer barley, with increasing the yields compared to the previous year. In the case of summer wheat, the yields decrease, but the overall picture remains gratifying. The expectations for the rye and the winter quantity cereal also show upward development.

The challenges should not be underestimated, but farmers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have proven in the past that they can do good business even in difficult times. The harvest time continues and we can be excited to see how the weather conditions will affect the total income.
