Wismar is investing 550,000 euros for improved bus transport!
Something is happening in public transport in Wismar! The city recently decided to put more money into bus transport. Since the offer is being upgraded by Nahbus GmbH with a new gas bus at the central bus station (ZOB), citizens can look forward to improved connections. The ZOB acts as the heart of Wismar's city transport, where all bus routes pass. There has been a new bus route plan since June 2023, which also includes the surrounding communities of Zierow, Barnekow, Lübow and Hornstorf. This makes traveling in and around Wismar easier and more environmentally friendly. As NDR reports, late and night trips have also been introduced, which is particularly advantageous for night owls.
Mayor Thomas Beyer (SPD) is pleased with the positive acceptance of the new offers. The potential analysis that was carried out is impressive: it expects an impressive 800,000 additional promotions per year. This is not only great news for all commuters and leisure drivers, but also shows that the need for good public transport in the region is high. But the increasing costs are causing problems for the district. The district has signaled that it cannot do everything financially to maintain the standard.
Wismar is moving forward
In order to defuse the situation, the Wismar citizens have decided on a nationwide rarity: 50 percent of the increased costs in public transport should be voluntarily borne by the city. For the coming year, the city of Wismar is planning a grant of 550,000 euros to the district of Northwest Mecklenburg. Increasing subsidies are already planned for the following years, with 650,000 euros in 2029. This shows that Wismar is ready to invest in the future of local transport in order to increase the quality of life of its citizens.
A study by Deutsche Bahn recently underlined how important local public transport is. Every euro invested in this area returns three euros to the national economy. This suggests that investments in public transport not only strengthen transport, but also the economy and the environment enormously. The operating costs of public transport in Germany amount to around 25 billion euros annually, while at the same time value creation of around 75 billion euros is generated. In addition, well-functioning public transport not only relieves pressure on the roads, but also the environment by reducing traffic accidents and minimizing noise pollution. Anyone who uses buses and trains today not only sets an example for the environment, but also benefits from a strong and lively range of services.
Technological improvements in mobility
If you would like to find out about travel times, you will find numerous options for obtaining digital information on the Nahbus online platforms. In addition to the classic timetables, real-time information is also provided via Google Maps and other services. With a new on-call bus concept, which has been running since March 1, 2024, passengers can now remain mobile even in less frequented areas. The flexible on-call bus lines, which are served as needed, further strengthen local public transport in the region. So if you want to take a detour to the neighboring community, you can do so easily.
With its commitment, Wismar shows that it is worth investing in local transport. This is not only a benefit for the city, but also for the entire region. If you also want to do something for the environment and your wallet, just get on the next bus line - it's worth it!
