Science meets Rostock: Enjoy exciting lectures in bars!
What's happening in Rostock? An exciting new series of events focuses on dialogue between science and the public. Under the title “Wavelength Science ON TOUR”, young scientists have come together to present complex topics in an understandable and entertaining way. Not only is knowledge imparted, but enthusiasm is also aroused. The first event is just around the corner: it starts on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the CraftBar on Margarethenstrasse.
At the opening event, a bird curator from the Rostock Zoo will report on the exciting work to save ringed plovers and other bird species. In addition, doctoral students from the Research Institute for Livestock Biology in Dummerstorf provide information about the healthy rearing of calves. Another highlight is the lecture by a doctoral student from the University of Rostock, who explains how hearing children learn to speak from deaf people. The series is aimed at everyone – students, young career starters and interested members of the general public. And best of all: entry is free!
Communicate science understandably
The basic idea behind this series of events can be easily combined with the goals of science communication. This is also about making complex scientific topics accessible to a broad public. According to a report from the University of Rostock, dialogue between scientists and people without specialist knowledge is one of the biggest challenges. The aim is to strengthen trust in scientific findings through understandable and motivating communication. An online course is offered to help scientists tailor their content to target groups and thus promote a better understanding of scientific topics.
It is important that scientific findings also stimulate discussions outside of specialist circles. This is the only way to create a vibrant public that is interested in science and actively participates in it. This not only strengthens society's knowledge, but also democracy, as the donor association's document underlines. It makes it clear that academic freedom is a cornerstone of our democracy, but is increasingly at risk worldwide.
Social responsibility of science
The ambiguous situation of academic freedom and freedom of expression is a topic that will also be dealt with in the announced series of events. This starts in June 2024 and aims to bring scientists into direct dialogue with citizens. The Stifterverband, in collaboration with other scientific organizations, is planning a comprehensive analysis of the current conditions and risks in scientific communication. Surveys and expert interviews are intended to help create a clear picture of the current situation and what measures are necessary to ensure the free exchange of knowledge.
In summary, it can be said that “Wavelength Science ON TOUR” not only serves as a platform for exciting lectures, but also builds a bridge between science and society - and this is exactly where the great opportunity lies for everyone involved. It will be interesting to see what the coming series of insights and discussions will bring!
