Woldegk celebrates 775 years: celebration for young and old begins!
Woldegk, the charming town in the Mecklenburg Lake District, is celebrating a remarkable anniversary this year: 775 years. To mark this milestone birthday, a big celebration will take place next weekend with a colorful program for young and old. The festival weekend will begin on Saturday with a historical parade that leads through the picturesque city walls. The carnival club from Friedland will be taking part, among others. The anticipation among citizens is great because this event promises a lot of fun and entertainment.
The festival is also accompanied by live music on two stages located on the Mühlenberg and the market square. Performances by well-known musicians are on the program, including a Roland Kaiser double, who provides the right pop vibes, as well as the popular singer Frank Schöbel and the 90s sensation Loona. The band Geier Pelzflug rounds off the musical experience and ensures a good mood and a great atmosphere among the visitors. On Sunday the celebration continues with a cozy family breakfast and an exciting children's program that will captivate the little guests.
The history of the windmill city
Woldegk, also known as the windmill town, has an eventful history that dates back to the High Middle Ages. The name Woldegk is derived from “wold” (forest) and “egge” (corner) and once referred to a castle that was built on the Helpter Mountains. These mountains are the highest point in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and offer a beautiful backdrop. The planned settlement is believed to have been founded between 1236 and 1250, although there is no exact year it was founded. The city's coat of arms, which was first documented in 1271 and reflects the Brandenburg influence, is also historically significant.
The cityscape of Woldegk is characterized by numerous windmills. One of the most famous is the Fröhlckesche Mühle, the oldest mill in the city. Interestingly, there is a mill museum on the northern outskirts of the town, which provides an insight into the history of wind-powered energy production with three mills. Visitors can admire the only functioning Dutch windmill in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which impresses with its rotating blades. A café in the oldest mill, the Ehlertsche Mühle from 1886, ensures that guests can enjoy the historical atmosphere with a cup of coffee.
A look into the future
After reunification, Woldegk was affected by economic decline, but since 1991 the city has begun to renovate its historic city center. The market square was fundamentally renovated between 1996 and 1999 according to modern plans. Local politics is active and, under the leadership of the last elected mayor Tony Hyna, who was elected in June 2024 with 50.6% of the vote, will try to revitalize Woldegk and create attractive offers for the population and tourists.
The current festivities make it clear that Woldegk is not only rooted in the past, but also looks to the future with joy for life and zest for action. So if you have the opportunity to visit the 775-year-old city, you shouldn't miss this festival and the numerous sights.
Today Woldegk has the opportunity to celebrate its traditions with a colorful festival weekend. Whether it's the musical performances or the impressive windmills - there's something for everyone here. Visit the city and let yourself be enchanted by the atmosphere.
