Number of company bankruptcies in MV reaches alarming highs!
The economic situation in Germany remains tense. A worrying trend is emerging, particularly in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: the number of company bankruptcies continues to rise. From January to May 2025, around 137 corporate bankruptcies were recorded, an increase of over 5% compared to the previous year. The other side of this coin is a large number of claims totaling 226 million euros that are associated with it. This increase in bankruptcies has been felt not only statewide but also nationwide, with bankruptcy filings increasing by 19.2% in July 2025 compared to the previous year n-tv reported.
A critical analysis of this situation shows that the increase in bankruptcies has been going on for three years. Experts attribute the drastic developments to the end of government Corona aid, which kept many companies afloat during the pandemic. With 194 company bankruptcies, 2021 was a comparatively “good” year, which is considered the lowest value in 30 years due to government support. But predictions for 2024 point to 273 insolvency proceedings, an increase of 7.5% compared to 2023.
The causes of the bankruptcies
High energy prices and excessive bureaucracy are putting enormous strain on companies. Jupp Zenzen, an economic expert at the DIHK, makes it clear that the economic crisis has not yet been overcome and that the liquidity of many companies is severely affected. These circumstances present many companies with serious challenges that they are often not equipped to deal with. Christoph Niering, Chairman of the VID, warns that many companies react too late to necessary structural changes.
Fortunately, there is a silver lining: the current numbers are relatively small compared to the wave of bankruptcies in the early 2000s, when over 1,000 bankruptcies occurred annually. Nonetheless
Business credit agencies report that more cases are expected for 2025 as a whole than in 2024, when 21,812 bankruptcies were recorded.
