Schloss Bellevue, 10117 Berlin, Deutschland - On May 6, 2025, Friedrich Merz (CDU) was elected Chancellor in the German Bundestag, which initiated the 25th Federal Government of the Federal Republic of Germany. This new government, which consists of a coalition of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Christian-Social Union (CSU) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), is the fifth black and red coalition government since World War II and follows the Scholz cabinet. Merz received 325 out of 630 votes in the second ballot - an absolute majority is required from 316 votes - and is also supported by Lars Klingbeil (SPD) as Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister. The Bundestag election, which took place on February 23, 2025, brought remarkable results: CDU and CSU were able to achieve 28.5 % of the votes, while the SPD suffered its worst result in the post -war period with only 16.4 %. The alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved a historical result with 20.8 %. The exploratory talks between the coalition partners began immediately after the election and came to graduation on March 8. The coalition agreement presented on April 9, 2025 is entitled "Responsibility for Germany".
