Munich: The most expensive student city in Germany with shocking prices!

München, Deutschland - A current study by the financial service provider remitly Student in Germany. With an educational cost index of 42.58 you have to expect high expenses for tuition fees, visa costs and rental prices. For a one-room apartment in the Bavarian state capital, the current rental prices are around € 720, which rose by 18% compared to 2021. These figures illustrate the financial challenges with which students are faced in Munich.

Potsdam and Hamburg follow Munich in places two and three of the most expensive cities for students in Germany, with indices of 39.47 and 39.00. The cheapest options, on the other hand, offer cities such as Aachen (29.14) and Marburg (27.68). Halle ranks as the cheapest city in Germany with an index of 22.24 and is also in second place in Europe, while Thessaloniki takes third place in Greece with an index of 22.61. Baku in Azerbaijan is the cheapest city for students worldwide with an index of 16.47.

Rental costs in the focus

based on the 22. Social survey of the German Student Union, the average expenses for rental costs in 68 German cities were recorded. The survey makes it clear that rental prices are usually lower than the often unofficial prices for shared rooms. This study comprises several forms of living, from funded dormitories to their own apartments and finds that the focus is on unmarried students in the first degree that no longer live with their parents.

The rental prices are risen in the city of Berlin, which was still in 15th place in the most expensive cities in 2006 and are now in 4th place. Between 2006 and 2021, rental prices in Berlin rose by 60%. In contrast, Dortmund recorded a significantly lower increase rate of 38%, but fell from 10th place in 2006 to a barely attractive place in 2021. In summary, it can be seen that the financial burden for students is significant due to high rental prices and increasing living costs in cities such as Munich and Berlin. The survey not only shows the challenges of the students in relation to rental prices, but also the differences between the different cities and how they can influence the decision for the place of study.
