Munich becomes 876: With shine and enjoyment for the big city birthday!
Marienplatz, 80331 München, Deutschland - Munich is celebrating its 876th birthday next weekend. The reason for the festive celebrations is the first documentary mention of the city on June 14, 1158 by Emperor Barbarossa. Numerous events will take place on Saturday, June 14th, and Sunday, June 15th, in the entire city area, especially around Marienplatz, under the motto "Gloria and enjoyment". Around 400,000 visitors from near and far are expected who can look forward to a diverse program.
The festivities start on Saturday at 11.15 a.m. with an opening by the second mayor Dominik Krause (Greens). This solemn kick-off event is accompanied by the Munich city guard, firecrackers and various attractions, including wine, honey and apple queens as well as market women and dragqueens. At the center of the celebrations will be the Marienplatz, where a music stage and a beer garden will attract visitors.

Special highlights of the festival are the birth day white sausages that are offered on Sunday from 11 a.m., as well as the Oktoberfest raffle on Sunday at 3 p.m., in which places are raffled off at the Oktoberfest. A 50 -meter -high ferris wheel on Wittelsbacherplatz invites you to a view over the city and also offers workshops and an open dance floor.
For children and families there are various attractions such as a children's carousel, a craftsman village and numerous food stalls at Odeonsplatz. Various guilds and advertisements present themselves in the craftsman village. A handicraft market with around 100 exhibitors from Sendlinger Straße to Theatinerstrasse is also being set up. There are deck chairs ready between the stands to take a break.
historical learning and tours
The old courtyard addresses the important role of the Isar in historical Munich, whereby insights into everyday life are given to earlier times. A historical play area is open on both days from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. In addition, the Munich tour guide association offers free old town rounds that start from 11.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thematic tours such as "Bavaria's queens and princesses" at 12.30 p.m. and "Without women nothing works" at 2.30 p.m.
There is special attention to the program for children in the old courtyard, where the diverse effects of the Isar on life in Munich are discussed. Here the little guests can try out historical techniques under guidance, such as cooking, washing and handicrafts. An info point organized by museums and castles in Bavaria gives insights into historical relationship networks of princely women in the Middle Ages.
For the journey, the use of public transport is strongly recommended. Marienplatz is easily accessible with several S-Bahn and subway lines. Due to closures, some bus lines are redirected and there is a ban on knife and weapons during the celebrations to protect security.
