New rail connection: Munich will soon be directly connected to London!

Traveling to London could soon be easier, as Deutsche Bahn and Eurostar are in the starting blocks to introduce a completely new direct connection between Germany and the British capital. According to a report by merkur.de Discussions are already underway about a connection from Frankfurt am Main to London, although the exact stopping points in Germany are still to be clarified. It is also still unclear whether Cologne will become a central stop, but the Eurostar trains will definitely stop in the cathedral city.

Currently, travelers from Germany to London often have to accept several changes, typically in Brussels. This can take a full eight hours, while the travel time from Munich can even be up to 17 hours. Everyone is even more excited about the potential innovations. Deutsche Bahn sees great potential in the direct connection, which aims to take around five hours. International long-distance transport is growing and the demand for short, comfortable rail journeys is increasing dramatically, according to experts.

Eurostar's plans

The railway companies are planning to significantly expand their international route networks. How tagesschau.de reports, Eurostar would like to expand its services in the next decade, particularly towards Germany and Switzerland. As part of these expansion plans, up to four direct trains a day between Frankfurt and London are planned in the early 2030s.

In order to realize these travel connections, technical, operational and legal hurdles must be overcome. This includes the renewal of vehicles with appropriate country approvals and compliance with the safety standards for the Eurotunnel. A quick clarification of customs and security controls will also be necessary.

New trains and connections

Eurostar plans to purchase around 50 new trains for a total of two billion euros to meet the increased needs of travelers. This expansion is a clear indication that international rail travel is in high demand. From September 2025, new routes between London, Frankfurt and Geneva are due to come into operation, which will offer travelers the opportunity to travel without having to change trains, making travel in these popular regions much easier. GB News reports that the service will be gradually increased from September and that the Eurostar fleet will grow to a total of 67 trains in the future.

So what happens next remains exciting. It is clear that travel to London could become more comfortable in the future, but the exact implementation and timing questions are still open. For many it is clear: these new connections could revolutionize the way we travel between Germany and Great Britain and make traveling as easy as a piece of cake!
