New Corona variant Nimbus: Faster spread and vaccination recommendations!
The new Coronavirus variant "Nimbus" is increasingly spreading and attracts attention both in Germany and internationally. According to SWR , Nimbus (NB.1.8.1), a subtype of the Omikron variant, was first recorded at the end of January 2025. In Germany, the variant was detected at the end of March 2025. It is particularly worrying that Nimbus already caused around 20 % of the infections examined in Germany in May 2025 and will increase to around 21.1 % of global cases by the end of May.
Compared to other active variants, Nimbus shows a faster increase, especially in the West Pacific region, where countries such as China, Japan and Australia are affected. Experts already warn of a possible wave of infection in Europe during the coming summer, since new COVID-19 cases were also registered in countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong.
similar symptoms and recommendations
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has determined a small spread of the virus in Germany despite the spreading variant. In May 2025, the incidence of acute respiratory diseases was almost 5,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, whereby only 2 % of the hospital stays came about due to COVID-19. Experts also point out that the current vaccines continue to offer protection against severe courses through Nimbus, which strengthens trust in the existing vaccination strategies.
who and other developments
The World Health Organization (WHO) classified Nimbus as a "variant under observation". This was done because there are indications that the immune system reacts less effectively to this variant. According to Who>, the Sars-Cov-2-monitoring is still considered important to observe changes in the virus and its effects on public health.
The WHO has made it clear that such changes occur frequently in viruses, with not all of them represent a significant threat. Nevertheless, the classification of Nimbus as a variant is an important measure to prioritize research and surveillance in pandemic. There are currently six variants under observation and one that was classified as a "variant of interest".
With a view to the future, the adaptation of the vaccines remains a priority to the latest virus variants. The STIKO continues to recommend an annual refresh vaccination for particularly endangered groups to protect the general population and to contain the spread of variants such as Nimbus.
