Union catches up: six points distance from the AfD - what does that mean for us?

In the latest survey on the political mood in Germany, the Union has expanded its lead over the AfD to six percentage points. According to the ARD "Germany trend", CDU and CSU were 29 percent on June 2 and 3, which corresponds to an increase of two points since the beginning of May. In contrast, the AfD remains unchanged at 23 percent. This marks the biggest lead for the Union since the beginning of March when the political Situation in Germany had started to change. The decline in the AfD shares shows that confidence in the Union apparently returns, while other parties are experiencing a decline or stagnation.

The decline in the SPD, which lost a point and is now 15 percent. The Greens, on the other hand, were able to gain a point and are now at 12 percent. The Left Party also fell by one point to 9 percent. FDP and BSW remain at 4 percent and would fail in the event of a choice at the five percent hurdle. The remaining parties together reach 4 percent, which represents a decline from one point. This survey was carried out by Infratest dimap , whereby 1,292 voters were interviewed. The maximum fluctuation range of the survey is two to three percentage points.

government evaluation and coalition issues

The coalition of the CDU/CSU and SPD, which took up government work on Tuesday, receives a reserved judgment from the population. Over 40 percent of the citizens are convinced of the new black-red coalition, which represents an improvement compared to 2021, but remains below the level of the traffic light alliance. Chancellor Merz is considered a good choice by a third of the citizens, while finance minister Klingbeil is positively rated by over 40 percent of those surveyed. Defense Minister Pistorius also enjoys broad approval among the population.

In connection with the AfD, a good two thirds of the respondents say that they support the classification of the party as a right -wing extremist. This is contrasting to the views of the AfD supporters, which vehemently reject this assessment. The topics addressed by the AfD seem to have a high priority in their own electorate - especially in questions of immigration that also arouse sympathy with almost every second German citizen.

political situation in Thuringia

In Thuringia, possible government coalitions are also a hotly discussed topic. The existing coalition between the CDU, BSW and SPD is currently being considered, which, however, has to worry about its majority due to the current surveys. According to dawum.de , a red frame shows that this coalition no longer has a majority if the voters think of the survey results and do not reach the five percent hurdle for the BSW. This could lead to a change in the political landscape in Thuringia if other parties use the opportunity to change the balance of power.

In summary, it can be said that the current political situation in Germany is characterized by a competition between the big parties, while smaller parties, like the AfD, continue to try to consolidate its position. The development in the coming weeks and months will be decisive for how the political situation will continue.
